Awareness of improved water quality is currently one important focus of our environmentally conscious world. Successful aquatic managers are making fountain and aeration equipment the foundations of many aquatic management programs. Decorative, floating aquatic fountains, one of many essential elements of an aquatic management program, are nevertheless “good, bad and beautiful.”
Fountains are “good” because they provide a beneficial aeration function to waterways by increasing the dissolved oxygen level which in turn stimulates the natural cleansing processes of waterways and minimizes the need for chemicals. Absorption of atmospheric oxygen from above the water surface by fountains results in the return of oxygen laden droplets into the water where the oxygen is released. An operating fountain is capable of transferring an estimated 2 pounds of oxygen per horsepower per hour to a waterway. Increased oxygen levels also improve the health and growth of aquatic animal life. Fountains further improve water quality by decreasing the growth of algae, eliminating foul odors, decreasing insect infestation, minimizing stagnation within a waterway, the sum of which is an aesthetically pleasing healthy body of water. Aeration is also “good” since it provides deterrence to thermal stratification of layers of different temperatures in waterways. Fountains, paradoxically, can also be “bad” when certain common sense, safety precautions are not observed by individuals using fountain equipped waterways for recreational purposes. Although fountain control boxes and pump motors powered by electricity ranging from 120 to 575 volts are safely insulated against accidental shock or electrocution, individuals using the floating fountains as swimming platforms are placing themselves in danger of serious injury. Similarly, careless individuals tampering with electrical control boxes or attempting to change fountain timers are also at risk.
